The Need
There is no denying that tap dance has a rich history. However, having a rich history is different than having a history that is accessible. Tap dance’s oral history is indeed hard to get a handle on, and the pictures, moving image and audio recording, and printed material are sometimes even more evasive. How then can we begin to talk about the rich history, when it can be at once rich and elusive.
The Solution
Build a traveling exhibit that showcases key dancers and acts from throughout tap dance’s history. From Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, to Baby Laurence, to Gregory Hines, the Tap Legacy Exhibit includes photographs as well as shoes and costume items. Use these images and items as starting points for the stories that give tap dance’s history such richness.
